John Geissman is a Professor of Geosciences, a Crosby Fellow of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and the American Geophysical Union. His research interests center around paleomagnetism, specifically:
- Rock magnetism and its use in solving geologic problems,
- How rocks acquire magnetism and how it is stabilized in them,
- How magnetic phases and their petrogenesis relate to processes, including deformation, affecting rocks

Awarded the 2020 Geoethics Medal by the International Association for Promoting Geoethics. The annual award recognizes scientists who have distinguished themselves in applying and assuring ethical approaches in geoscience research and practice.
