    James Bateman, famous for his research on orchids of Mexico and Guatemala and the Genus Ondontoglossum (tropical American orchids), was born in the vicinity of Bury in Lancashire, England. He served on the Royal Horticultural Society’s Plant Exploration Committee. His favorite flowers were Rhododendrons and Azaleas.
