George I. Hockensmith worked mainly as a Superintendent for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company building hangars such as the Wingfoot Lake airfield, southeast of Akron, Ohio. He also helped build bridges like the Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C. and the the Trinity River Bridge in Dallas, Texas to name only a few. In South America, he built airfields and the British Guiana Air Base at Georgetown, British Guiana, for which he received the Ordem Do Cruzeiro Do Sul or Medal of the Order of the Southern Cross.
