Abstract

From 1934-1935 the Region 12 Texas and Oklahoma Committee of the Public Works of Art Project commissioned art for the embellishment of public buildings in Texas. White artists, who were born in Texas or came to live in the state, who received commissions, painted oil on canvas, watercolor, easel paintings, and lithographs that render African Americans beautifully. These unstudied images of the black in Texas art offer opportunities for new critical analyses in the field of study of Texas art.
