Leonard James Povey (1904-1984) taught himself to fly and served in the United States Army Air Service (USAS) in the 1920s. In 1934 he was invited to Cuba to inspect its aircraft and facilities, and was made head of the Cuban Air Force. He also developed the "Cuban 8" aerial acrobatic maneuver. He served as president of Eastern Airlines during World War II and as an aviation consultant. He was inducted into the South Carolina Aviation Association Hall of Fame in 1991.
